The history of Irish techno pretty much begins and ends with Reg Baker. In a field so obviously dominated by Central European and English artists, it is doubly refreshing to now see an electronic recording by a new Irish artist equally unconcerned with the dance floor. But that is where the comparisons end. Employing a clever mix of vocoders, analog synths, and keyboards, Kalle Ryan puts his own distinctive mark on the electronica landscape with a record that is both playful and haunting. Dark looping sounds with minimalistic vocals, lend an eerie yet uplifting tone that is reminiscent of Autobahn by electronica pioneers Kraftwerk. Overall, Databank is an intelligent and important new entry into the electronica canon. Give it a go, you won't be disappointed.
