| With every new Kalle Ryan record, the buying public invariably reels back in horror, or they rush headlong into an embrace of its every instant. His latest release, The Rambler is no different. In fact, if anything, this record (and its forthcoming second and third instalments) will only serve to solidify and confirm one's opinion of Kalle. Once again he has crafted an album that teeters precariously between profound truth and obnoxious pretension, and the ultimate decision on that is up to you. On the surface, this album plays as an experimental journey through sounds and noises with angst-ridden lyrics (with the added bizarre alter-ego "The Rambler" as performer). If one chooses to look deeper, it may play more as a cautionary symphony on loneliness, impotence and communication breakdown in the modern environment. Either way, despite its obvious ambition, this record is set to be dismissed or revered with equal vigour. Then again, most of you have probably already made your mind up, which is ironic if one considers the subject matter of the album. (7/10) |
